Brief history of the symposium series: the 4th DMS(P) Symposium followed the highly enjoyable and successful meetings hosted by: Ron Kiene in Alabama, USA in June 1995 (Kiene, Visscher, Keller & Kirst [eds.], Biological and Environmental Chemistry of DMSP and Related Sulfonium Compounds. Plenum Press), Winfried Gieskes and Jacqueline Stefels in Groningen, The Netherlands in August 1999 (Journal of Sea Research Volume 43, Number 3-4, August 2000) and Maurice Levasseur and colleagues in Rimouski, Canada in September 2002 (Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences Volume 61, Number 5, May 2004).

Research on DMS in the environmental context was pioneered by Professor James (Lovelock, Maggs & Rasmussen. 1972. Atmospheric sulphur and the natural sulphur cycle. Nature 237, 452). So we were delighted that Jim was able to attend as our guest of honour. He opened the symposium with a talk entitled ‘Thoughts on DMS and related compounds’. The programme, abstracts of the talks and posters presented through Wednesday 3 – Friday 5 May and participant address list can be found in the Programme and Abstracts book. You can also access photographs taken during the meeting here.

Papers based on some of the talks and posters presented at this symposium were published in a special issue of the journal Aquatic Sciences – Research Across Boundaries. You can access the special issue contents list here. Thanks to Silvia Jost of the Aquatic Sciences editorial office, Barbara Sulzberger the Editor in Chief and everyone who reviewed papers for this special issue.
